In 1858 the long hot summer became the Great Stink as raw sewage from the growing city emptied into the Thames turning into an open sewer. Something had to be done and this led to one of the most remarkable feats of civil engineering ever seen. Visit Sir Joseph Bazalgette’s Cathedral of Sewage - The Crossness Treatment Works at Bexley - where the finest Victorian ornamental cast ironwork can be seen and discover how the Victorians disposed of the city’s raw sewage. Your day starts with a short guided city walking tour revealing the story of “spending a penny”, then cruise from Westminster to maritime Greenwich for free time to take lunch (not included) before boarding the coach for your transfer to the amazing Grade I listed Crossness.
